More on Pastoral Plagiarism

A few weeks back, I posted on a piece written by Steve Sjogren, and posted on Rick Warren’s Pastors.com, in which he justified plagiarism on the part of pastors. I found it pathetic, frankly, a sad indictment on the state of affairs in the evangelical church. This week, there is more on the subject:

Justin Taylor writes on Sermon Plagiarism Article in the WSJ.

Tim Challies weighs in on the same article in Plagiarism in the Pulpit.

Challies concludes his piece with these words: “A pastor who plagiarizes sermons is clearly not fulfilling his primary responsibility. He is not investing time and effort in studying the Word, in understanding the Word, and in helping others understand what God has taught him.”

Amen and amen…

  2. AAAHHHH. Your sight changed genders. It was nice and manly, and now it is pink with cutesy bubbles all over the place.

And overnight, Warren post count increased from 69 to 111? Me thinks something fishy is going on.

  3. Hey, if we’re plagiarizing sermons, why stop there? We could just rip off really great song lyrics and read them as “spiritual poetry” for sermons. Watercolor ponies would make for a great message.

Or hey, why not movie quotes? Once we give up on actually studying the scripture, the sky is the limit!

  4. Now this is MORE LIKE IT!

I would tell you what is going on Hefe, but you can’t handle the truth!

I made that up all by myself.

  5. See, I was right about the movie quotes. You shold turn that into a sermon series, Warren. Sure beats reading.

  6. Hefe – Dude, you know I don’t read and I am not about to take up sermons.

Just for the record, I miss the pink page.

  • No Kool Aid Zone?

drink the Kool-Aid - to accept an argument or philosophy blindly.

no kool aid zoneThis phrase comes from the 1978 "Jonestown massacre" in which most members of the Peoples Temple cult, blindly following their leader Jim Jones, committed suicide by drinking cyanide-laced Kool-Aid.

Radically Tolerant - of all people, irrespective of race, faith, circumstance. As a person, you will be treated with the respect and dignity you deserve as an individual created in the image of God.

Radically Intolerant - of slipshod reasoning, emotion without intellectual substance, bad ideas, lazy thinking, cowardly ad hominem attacks, the preposterous notion that 9/11 is some government conspiracy (proceed directly to the Loony Bin; do not pass "Go"; do not collect $200), the designated hitter, and the Dallas Cowboys.
