Derek Webb: May His Tribe Increase

I couldn’t have identified the name “Derek Webb” three days ago (Jack Webb’s grandson?), but I’m mightily impressed with the former Caedmon’s Call (sorry, but I can’t really name any of their songs) musician, because he just cut a CD, and he’s giving the thing away, and I’ve listened to four songs, and they’re pretty good! In this age of Christian merchandising, when it’s hard to walk through a Christian bookstore without rolling my eyes about a dozen times and wanting to start a huge bonfire (in part, but not only, because of the excessive commercialism), it’s just mighty refreshing to see a young man like Derek do what he’s doing. I am thinking I’d like to hear this guy in concert (and I’d pay some money to do it). Here’s the site:

Kudos, Derek, and may your tribe increase…

  3. Since Byron has little past interaction with Derek Webb, I’ll put in my two cents here. Derek is something of a modern-day music prophet. He split with Caedmon’s (not a nasty split) primarily because the issues he wanted to sing about were not appropriate for “maintaining their mainstream image.” In his previous release called “She Must and Shall Go Free,” Derek sings difficult lyrics about the Church (yes, I meant to make the “c” capital). In his song called Wedding Dress, he writes, “‘Cause I am a whore, I do confess, I put You on just like a wedding dress and I run down the aisle, I’m a prodigal with no way home, I put You on just like a ring of gold and I run down the aisle.”

Among other musings, he writes of the Truth that “she don’t need an apology for being who she is, and she don’t need your help making enemies.” Indeed, Christians too often take it upon themselves to assist the Truth in making enemies!

  • No Kool Aid Zone?

drink the Kool-Aid - to accept an argument or philosophy blindly.

no kool aid zoneThis phrase comes from the 1978 "Jonestown massacre" in which most members of the Peoples Temple cult, blindly following their leader Jim Jones, committed suicide by drinking cyanide-laced Kool-Aid.

Radically Tolerant - of all people, irrespective of race, faith, circumstance. As a person, you will be treated with the respect and dignity you deserve as an individual created in the image of God.

Radically Intolerant - of slipshod reasoning, emotion without intellectual substance, bad ideas, lazy thinking, cowardly ad hominem attacks, the preposterous notion that 9/11 is some government conspiracy (proceed directly to the Loony Bin; do not pass "Go"; do not collect $200), the designated hitter, and the Dallas Cowboys.
