Apologies and Promises

September 29, 2006

I need to apologize to my loyal readers (all 6 of you?) for the fact that I haven’t posted in a week. Suffice it to say that my life has been a zoo this past week—a good zoo, mind you, but a zoo nonetheless. I will have some news and views on the way after this weekend; we’re heading off again in a few hours, and I have miles to go before I sleep on this one.

Speed-Racer

September 28, 2006

Howdy folks, Webbie Dude Paul here once again.

Y’all need to make sure you check out the new Photo Gallery page that I just added to The No Kool-Aid Zone. This past Saturday night our resident pundit climbed behind the wheel of a Pro-Stock race car at Sharon Speedway to compete in their annual Faster Pastor race.

I think you can tell from the photos that Byron rather enjoyed himself. This was his first time piloting a race car, and I do believe he gave a good accounting for himself. He was coming extremely strong on the last lap, and without question, he would have won with one more lap.

Here is the excerpt from the official Sharon Speedway press release:

Eight local pastors competed in the speedway’s second “Faster Pastor” race and put on quite a show for the crowd as well as their parishioners! Previous winner, Rev. Erv Urshitz, of McDonaldsville United Methodist Church in Canton, Ohio, drove Jaime Duncan’s #67 stock to victory. Pastor Jim Stewart of Orangeville Baptist Church started on the front row with Byron Harvey from Fellowship Community Church in Mercer, PA. Whipkey jumped to the early lead followed by Harvey. Urshitz started third and made his way to the lead by lap 3. Whipkey battled back to lead laps 4 thru 7, but Urshitz made a move on the final circuit to take the win. Whipkey finished third second, followed by Harvey and Tom Stiver of Niles, Ohio’s Fairview United Methodist Church. Other pastors participating were Rev. Jim Koehler of Shekinah Church in Bristolville, Ohio, track chaplain Pastor Joe Nevin of Hartford Community Church and Rev. Rick Oaks of First United Methodist Church in Warren, Ohio.

When you view the Photo Page, make sure you use the slideshow button and arrows (at the bottom) to scroll thru the photos; due to a design issue, the thumbnails were forced to be too small to be useable. Also be aware that there seems to be an annoying stutter to the slideshow when using Internet Explorer, this problem does not occur if you are using either the FireFox or Opera browser.

Guess I’ve Bought my Last Gas from Citgo

September 21, 2006

Didn’t know that Citgo was owned by the government of Venezuela, but if the loony president of that country wants to step on our soil (protected, no doubt, by our Secret Service) and call my president the “devil”, then Citgo can keep their gas.

Corrs Video of the Week: I Know my Love

September 20, 2006

The Chieftains make a lot of similar music to the Corrs, except that what Andrea is to “pretty”, there’s a Chieftain who is the same to “homely”. Anyway, on this traditional Irish song, the Corrs and the Chieftains join their musical talents, and the mix comes out pretty well! If you want head-banging, this ain’t your song, but if you like a fun Irish melody, enjoy!

Preach Big…

September 16, 2006

or go home.

That’s what Doug at CoffeeSwirls says, and he’s right on. Monkeying around with the preaching of the gospel of Christ is not a luxury we have. Thanks, Doug, for the reminder.

This is Perjury, Where I Come From

September 16, 2006

Barry Bonds knew exactly what he was doing, according to at least two sources.

Conte indicates that Bonds knew about steroids

I don’t know about you, but I call it perjury on the part of the Great Cheat.

Taking Up for Liberals? Yep, on this One…

September 16, 2006

George Regas, rector of All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena (a church and pastor with which I might conservatively agree maybe 10 percent of the time, I’d bet; actually, visiting the website as I’m doing just now, that figure might be high…), preached a sermon on the eve of the 2004 elections critical of the Iraq war and the Bush tax cuts; the IRS has ordered the church to turn over emails and documents related to this activity; here’s the article:

Anti-War Sermon Leads IRS to Probe Church for Tax Violations

The current pastor is going to ask his congregation whether or not to comply. My vote? Kindly invite the IRS to take a hike. If, as the article suggests, Rector Regas did not tell his congregation for whom they ought vote; if in fact he did just the opposite, and said that he would not tell them how to vote, then it’s flat none of the government’s, nor the IRS’s, business what he says from his pulpit. And I’m emailing him to tell him so…

In fact, here’s the text of my email:

Rev. Bacon,

Allow me to express my support for your church in its fight against government intrusion. Though I surmise that we’d be on opposite sides of the theological and political fence 90% of the time, I wholeheartedly encourage you to stand strong against the IRS on this one. If Rev. Regas did not endorse a candidate–and indeed, expressly did NOT do so–then his speech cannot be regulated in the form of the withholding of tax exempt status. Know that at least ONE very conservative evangelical is solidly in your camp on this one (and I just blogged about it). I may disagree totally with what you say, but I will defend with all my being your right to say it.

Sincerely,

Rev. Byron D. Harvey

  • No Kool Aid Zone?

drink the Kool-Aid - to accept an argument or philosophy blindly.

no kool aid zoneThis phrase comes from the 1978 "Jonestown massacre" in which most members of the Peoples Temple cult, blindly following their leader Jim Jones, committed suicide by drinking cyanide-laced Kool-Aid.

Radically Tolerant - of all people, irrespective of race, faith, circumstance. As a person, you will be treated with the respect and dignity you deserve as an individual created in the image of God.

Radically Intolerant - of slipshod reasoning, emotion without intellectual substance, bad ideas, lazy thinking, cowardly ad hominem attacks, the preposterous notion that 9/11 is some government conspiracy (proceed directly to the Loony Bin; do not pass "Go"; do not collect $200), the designated hitter, and the Dallas Cowboys.
