An Article Worth Reading on the Emerging Church
Ed Stetzer puts into words some of what I’ve been thinking, although he articulates it more clearly than I could.
Understanding the Emerging Church
I’ve said for some time that I see two strains within the EC movement: one I can embrace, and one that scares me. Ed sees three strains, and maybe he’s right. But the point is that when you say “emerging church”, it’s become almost like saying “Community Church”: you’ve said nothing, or at least you’ve said something so vague that you must ask for more amplification. I’m on board with Stetzer’s “relevants”; I have some sympathies for the “reconstructionists”; I’m leery of the “revisionists”. There is much to learn from the EC, but having these helpful categories at the ready isn’t a bad thing.

This phrase comes from the 1978 "Jonestown massacre" in which most members of the Peoples Temple cult, blindly following their leader Jim Jones, committed suicide by drinking cyanide-laced Kool-Aid.

Great comments! As for me, I see three strains: one I like, one that puzzles me, one that disturbs me, and one that cracks me up. I try to focus on the last one.
