SteelerDirtFreak – Doing a Little Remodeling While The Pundit Is Away

As the keeper of all things ‘webbie’ for Byron, I’m doing a little remodeling to the site while he is gone. Let me know what you think of the new look – good or bad.

And I might also mention that if you have upgraded your WordPress to the new 1.5 (and if you haven’t, you really ought to, right now!), and you are using the wonderful default theme, you really need to check out this killer app which will generate a new header image for you that you just drop into place – everything is done for you.

  • Hey SDF, how come all the stuff on the right side of the page is way down where I can’t see it unless I scoll for miles?

    Just wondering…

Actually that is one of the many bugs that is associated with the vile evil known as Internet Explorer. Besides leaving your computer wide open for malicious scripting attacts, it completely ignores valid css and displays pages in random manners.

I’m working on a bug fix now to try to force IE to actually render the page as it is written.

For security purposes, and for optimal viewing of web pages, I can’t recommend Firefox ( http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=affiliates&id=41033&t=78 ) highly enough.

But to sum it up, Internet Explorer sucks as a web browser, and I’m working on trying to figure out a fix. (hmm, maybe someday I’ll have to blog on how I really feel about internet explorer!)

Here is a screenshot of the page as correctly rendered:

  • So SDF, how do you really feel about IE? :)

Looks nice on the capture above but I am only getting that occasionally. What do you think about Mozilla?

  • Happy to see you got rid of Byron’s beady little eyes.

  • Don: Amen to the beady eye removal…

The Mozilla Suite is good, Firefox is Mozilla’s stand-alone browser, and from what I can tell is much lighter weight (thus runs faster) than the old Mozilla.

One of the best features about Firefox is the extensions; you can add literally hundreds of extensions to customize your browser to be exactly what you need it to be.

When reading Byron’s posts, one of my favorite extensions to use is the Dictionary extension which lets me highlight one of his obscure and seldom used words, right click it, and search an online dictionary for the meaning. As long as it’s not a word he made up trying to impress everyone, it opens a new tab, with the dictionary page for that word.

And tabs is another key part of Firefox – instead of having 15 windows open while you are checking out different sites, you can open new pages in tabs – same window – and then just flip from tab to tab as needed.

But back to the ORIGINAL original subject…. Is that still this morning that it is only working occassionally? I spent most of the night trying to de-bug it, and I thought we had narrowed it down to the java-script enabled blog-rolls that used to be in the side column. I moved them to their own seperate page and thought I had IE working correctly. A couple of people from the WordPress boards had been helping me and they also thought we had it straight.

  • The titles are difficult to read in Safari. The outline effect doesn’t show up well and I have no idea what some of the titles say. Consider dropping the hollow and/or outline effect
