State of the Union
Since we got rid of cable–and I haven’t missed it much in two-plus months, frankly–I didn’t get to hear the President’s State of the Union. So far, I’m suffering no ill effects…but anyway, I did read this article from Yahoo News:
Social Security Makeover Tops Bush Agenda
Well, I hope Social Security reform tops his agenda; nice to have a president with the gumption to tackle this monstrous issue. I still maintain that the fact that it will–or won’t–”go broke in 2042″ isn’t the primary reason to fix it; the main reason to fix Social Security is called “freedom“. All the people arguing against changing anything are, at root, afraid of freedom, afraid that something will upset the “security” that Socialist Security provides. Two things: one, it’s my money, and you’re not my nanny, Washington; two, the old saying is that “those who would trade liberty for security deserve neither”. This is our current Socialist Security system in a nutshell. While Bush’s proposals won’t change that at the core, they will provide some measure of freedom–and it works, by the way; ask the Chileans, or the folks in Galveston.
Also, this from the article:
In a 53-minute speech, Bush also blended the conservative with the compassionate, and gave no ground on his policy on the war in Iraq (news – web sites) in which more than 1,400 American forces have died.
Notice: “blended the conservative with the compassionate”. No, liberal-media-type writer David Espo; for there to have been a “blend”, he’d have had to have blended “liberalism” with “compassion”. Any “mixture” of true “conservatism” with “compassion” is pretty much an unadulterated solution.

This phrase comes from the 1978 "Jonestown massacre" in which most members of the Peoples Temple cult, blindly following their leader Jim Jones, committed suicide by drinking cyanide-laced Kool-Aid.
